WBCSD to support IUCN’s World Conservation Congress in 2012

Geneva, October 28, 2011 – The WBCSD will be the major business organization supporting next year’s International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress, the most significant event in the conservation calendar. The WBCSD will act as the leading business voice on ecosystems and biodiversity, coordinated by its Ecosystems Focus Area team.

Stigson highlights significant business opportunities sustainable initiatives hold in television interview

Geneva, October 26, 2011 - While participating at the launch of the new Sustainability report of Instituto de la Empresa Familiar in Madrid, WBCSD President Björn Stigson was interviewed by Luis Vicente Muñoz for the "Capital" program of Business TV. The interview focused on WBCSD's Vision 2050 report. Stigson highlighted that leading companies are aware of the sustainability challenges - and also of the significant business opportunities in providing solutions to address them. He expressed serious concerns on the current lack of leadership and emphasized that the WBCSD will continue calling on governments to create the appropriate framework conditions and incentives for a transition to a sustainable future.

CEO-led Sustainable Development Platform to be established in Singapore

Singapore, October 25, 2011 - The WBCSD and Singapore Business Federation (SBF) have joined forces to establish a CEO-led Sustainable Development Platform in Singapore. The organizations signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) at last week’s Asia Pacific Sustainability Leadership Forum to jointly create an independent organization. It would consist of a group of leading local companies and foreign subsidiaries to provide businesses in Singapore with access to international best practices and collaboration opportunities. The organization would part of the WBCSD’s Regional Network.

Integrating Energy Efficiency report explores efficiency challenges across the power sector value chain

Geneva, October 21, 2011 – A new WBCSD report titled Integrating Energy Efficiency addresses the challenge of climate change driving a three-pronged strategy in the electricity sector: decarbonization of electricity supply, energy savings along the entire electricity value chain, and electrification of fossil fuelled processes. Energy efficiency is critical to all three aspects of this strategy.

Register for the WBCSD’s Durban Business Day

Keep moving: climate, business and growth for all will be the theme of the upcoming WBCSD Durban Global Business Day on December 5, taking place during the 17th annual UN Climate Change Conference. Jointly organized by the WBCSD, the International Chamber of Commerce and the National Business Initiative, the event will highlight the global business commitment to low-carbon economic growth.

The sessions will provide a platform for companies to discuss how they can meet the challenges of climate change and how they can work with governments on finding solutions. The morning panel will focus on finance as a driver for increased private sector investment into low-carbon technologies and the role of business in creating climate resilience at local and national levels. This will be followed by the Durban Debate amongst CEOs and prominent individuals on global issues affecting the climate agenda. The afternoon session will focus on the particular climate challenges facing South Africa and the processes needed to catalyze action and empower countries.

New tool launched for investors and business to better manage water risks

Geneva, October 18, 2011 – The Ceres Aqua Gauge: A Framework for 21st Century Water Management report was released today by Ceres in collaboration with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and sustainability consultancy Irbaris. It bridges the gap between investors and companies by offering a framework for better water risk management, and guidance on developing water strategies.

Three ways to improve water, energy and food security

Geneva, October 14, 2011 – A forum focused on the linkages between companies’ international growth strategies and sustainability principles and actions was convened by World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) member Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM). Filippo Veglio, Deputy Director of WBCSD’s Development Focus Area, presented Vision 2050, which calls for a new agenda for business laying out a pathway to a world in which nine billion people can live well, and within the planet’s resources, by mid-century.
